Elephant Hawk Moth, Art Print
I cannot remember when I first came across the Elephant Hawk Moth caterpillar, but once seen, there’s no doubting what it is, as it looks like an elephant’s trunk with big eyes on the end!
From July to September, the caterpillars can be seen feeding on plants like Fuchsia, Bedstraw and Willowherb. The chrysalis then overwinters in soil or vegetation.
The very distinctive gold/olive and pink adult moths are important pollinators. They fly from May to early August and hover in front of the flower as they feed on nectar, which is why they’ve earned the ‘Hawk’ part of their name. It’s important to provide flowers, like Honeysuckle, that open or produce nectar at dusk or during the night for these moths.
