Garden Tiger Moth, Art Print

The Garden Tiger Moth is a very distinctive night-flying moth, with a dark brown furry body and strikingly patterned brown and white forewings, and orange, blue and black hind wings.  The moth’s bright colours, its ability to make noise with its wings, and emit high pitched squeaking sounds, as well as the ability to spray an irritating substance if threatened, all combine to protect the adult moth from being eaten by bats or birds.  The adults are visible between June and August, and prefer wild habitats, feeding on nectar from a variety of plant species.

The very hairy rusty brown and black caterpillars feed on plants like Dock and Nettle. 
The hairs are an irritant and help to protect it from predators.  The larvae go dormant over winter, resume feeding and pupate in spring, and emerge as adults in June or July.
